Similarities And Differences Between Texts Worksheets
Related ELA Standard: RI.1.9
Students start to analysis literature by working on a single piece. We often start with identifying the theme, setting, characters, and the motivations of the characters. This can be a tough process in and of itself. When we start to move towards higher levels of thinking, we have students compare two completely different pieces of literature. This process requires them to complete the basic analysis of each piece and then compare their analysis between the two. On this page you will find a group of worksheets that does just that.

When Comparing Two Texts How Do You Spot the Similarities and Differences?
Here are some of the ways that will help you spot the similarities and differences in two different texts while doing a comparison.
Focus On the Message
The message is the main purpose behind a text. It is the reason why the text is written in the first place. The author attempts to convey some sort of a message to the readers. It could be anything. It is your job to find out. Whenever you are comparing two texts, pay focus on what sort of message is being conveyed through them. It is possible that both texts will have a huge difference when it comes to the main idea. They both might not follow the same theme or main idea. However, it is also possible that both texts may have different writings, but contain the same message. You can further investigate the difference or similarity by comparing the topics and then the topic sentences. You can also take a deeper look at the conclusion of the text. That is where the main point of the entire text is usually hidden.
Pay Attention to the Supporting Details
Another way to spot similarities and differences between two texts is to pay attention to the supporting details. You will mostly find differences because each text usually has unique supporting details. Notice the facts that have been mentioned along with the examples. Then compare it with the other text. You can also make two different tables of contrast and comparison and write all your findings in it.
Identify Structural Similarities and Differences
A great way to spot the differences and similarities between two different texts is to identify the structure of both. What written structure has been followed? What style has been adopted? These questions can help you in identifying the structural difference.
