The History Of Fathers Day
Father's Day is celebrated all around the world on different days. Father's Day holds immense significance in most cultures because it is the day when children get to appreciate their fathers for all the efforts that they do for their children. Fathers are a symbol of security and safety for the children. They provide for them in all ways. Children can always count on their fathers for everything. This is the reason why Father's Day is celebrated with much enthusiasm. Children express their love and admiration for their fathers on this day.
The history of Father's Day is different in different cultures and regions. In the United States, there are two claimed origins of Father's Day. According to the first story, Father's Day was celebrated in the Washington State for the first time on June 9, in the year 1910. The idea to celebrate Father's Day came to the mind of a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. She was listening to the Mother's day sermon at a church in the year 1909. The Mother's Day sermon at the church made her realize that fathers deserve equal admiration and appreciation as mothers. They both equally deserve the praise as they both make sacrifices and efforts for their children. At that time, there was no trend of holding such sermons for the appreciation of fathers. That is why Sonora decided to celebrate a Father's Day that would honor her father. Sonora's father was a veteran of the Civil war. He raised his six children as a widower when his wife passed away while giving birth to the sixth child. Sonora came up with a thought of dedicating a day to her father. June 5th was initially suggested to be Father's Day as it was the death anniversary of Sonora's father. But due to some issues, the day was changed to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
Another story regarding the history of Father's Day took place in West Virginia. Grace Golden suggested to the minister of methods church that they should celebrate a Father's Day after a mine explosion killed 361 men of that region. In the year 1966, Lyndon. B. Johnson, ordered that the third Sunday of June will be celebrated as official Father's Day.
