Early in our lives often a few months after we are born, we are screened for having the ability to hear. Yes, doctors can tell whether your reaction or give indications that you can hear sound. What doctors can't do is control how you are going to interpret and make use of that sound. It is estimated that somewhere between ten and twelve percent of children have trouble translating sounds that they may hear. These worksheets will help better your student's ability to auditory process sounds that they may hear.

Auditory Processing Worksheets:

Read Alouds – Ask your child to follow the directions, then read the directions aloud. Your child should follow the directions by marking the appropriate picture.

Yes or No – Read each sentence to your child. Ask your child to circle YES if what you read describes what is happening in each picture, and NO if what you read is not correct.

What Is Auditory Processing


Auditory processing simply refers to the process of listening to the sounds from our environment and then sending it to the language part of the brain to interpret the meaning for better understanding. There are so many skills that add up to the complete process of auditory processing. Here are some important elements of auditory processing.


Attention


Auditory attention is the ability of the person to be able to tune into the auditory input. It means that the person becomes aware of the sounds of his or her surroundings.


Sound Localization


Sound localization is the process of determining the source of the sound.


Discrimination


The term auditory discrimination refers to the ability to differentiate between different sounds. This means that the person is able to understand different words and sounds.


Sequential Processing


The term auditory sequential processing refers to the ability of a person to store different sounds. It also refers to the ability to listen and recall the stored sounds.


Tonal Processing


This term refers to the ability of the person to process the sounds in the correct way. It is a step further from the auditory discrimination.


Memory


Auditory memory is the memory of sounds. It also refers to recalling the sounds.


Sensitivity


Auditory sensitivity refers to the loudness of the sound. Some people are hypo sensitive which means that they have reduced response to the nearby sounds. Hypersensitive individuals over-respond to the nearby sounds.


Closure


Auditory closure means the ability to be able to interpret the meaning of the missing sounds.


Language Processing


It refers to the understanding of language. Hearing the sounds of the words and then understanding what they mean.


What Can We Do to Help Children with Difficulties?


The first thing you should automatically do is do your best to minimize any distractions. While we all do not want to live in a plain vanilla world, it is helpful to have spaces that are dedicated for learning. In these areas there is minimal added diversions whether they be in a visual or auditory medium. The true is the same for the surrounding space of your dwelling. If you learn near something very noisy, consider moving to somewhere that is not. This can have a substantial impact on ability to process and eventually learn for this child.


When working with students that have these issues it helps to start by making sure you have the attention of the student before you begin communicating with them. Make sure to maintain eye contact with them and that they do the same. It is much easier if you are at the same eye level. Since students need extra time, speak slower than you normally would. Do not move on to new topics until you are sure that they understood what you put out there. What often can help you is to repeat important words and phrases and really emphasize them with either body language or tone. The last thing to remember is to be patient for a response and give them extra time to get back to you.
