Community Helpers are the people that make our community and ourselves thrive. These are the people that we rely on every day. Community helpers provide either a product or a service that is aimed at the members of our local communities. Described in the simplest terms, they are the people who make a career of helping others. The nature of their position often makes them selfless individuals. Community helpers will often blend in the background of our lives, which makes them easy to forget and lack a degree of appreciation for. When a tragedy arises, they instantly become the people we turn to in our time of need. We want to encourage students to have a level of appreciation for these members of community. These worksheets will identify and introduce these people that are all around us.

Who are the Helpers in Your Community?


Our local community of people includes everyone we know and rely on to go about our day. This was never more aware to people throughout the world than during the 2020 COVID pandemic. People that play key roles in our local communities not only stepped up, but they also knocked it out of the park. This is just what you would expect from people that dedicate their life to others. The concept of an essential worker came right to the surface, the minute we all became locked in. People that help us provide essential food for our families really moved up in our minds, at that point.


Essential workers often require a high level of education and training to prepare them for the rigors of their immediate job. Doctors and nurses help us heal our bodies at times when we need them most. Doctors spend, on average, twelve years of their lives just preparing to be able to treat patients. Nurses who are often just assisting the doctor spend an average of four and half years training to serve the role. Depending on their specialty, doctors can spend upwards of two decades to prepare to server their respective communities.


Other community helpers put their lives in great danger to serve their communities. Country wide about 10% of all police officers are assaulted in the line of duty. While we consider policemen and firefighters to have the most dangerous career, fishermen have it severely worse. In the 2000s, the number fisherman that died while perform their job outpaced all other professions by far. The most common occurrence of exposure came from mechanical breakdown that eventually led to drowning.


There are so many people that we count on to get through a typical day, that it makes it difficult to quantify. There are number of people that we do not even realize have a huge impact on our ability to get through every average day. What would happen if your garbage was not picked up this week, or the next month for that matter? What if you went to the grocery store and there was no food on the shelves? What if all the gas stations in your area sudden shut down? Would an automobile even serve a purpose if there was no fuel for it.


Communication is an essential component to moving forward in our world. While everyone initial thinks of an app on their phone to make that easier, the phone and people behind it, help our communities move forward. This also applies to mail carriers and any type of delivery service you could possibly require. It could be for food, medicine, everyday well being knowledge, which is in limited supply these days.


There are many different positions that serve the community that are rarely known or understood. Did you know the average baker on the East Coast of the United States wakes up at 2 am to begin their shift? A restaurant may close its doors at 11 PM, but the chefs and staff spend another 2-3 hours cleaning the facility to prepare for the next day. Plumbers (the people that fix the water system in your home) will often work 60-hour weeks as temperatures drastically change. This is when most pipes burst or leak.
