Nouns are people, places or things. If you can identify a noun with one of your human senses (hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, or touch) it is classified as a concrete noun. This type of noun encumbers a great many things because anything that is tangible is by definition also concrete. There is an unreal enormity of nouns that have been classified in this category. The worksheets located in this section ask students to classify or create their own nouns based on the subjects that are presented.

What is the Difference Between a Concrete and an Abstract Noun?
When you are trying to define a type of noun, as stated above, you simply need to use one of your five senses. If you can use any of those senses to detect this noun, than the noun is concrete. If your five senses are useless for detecting this noun, then it is abstract. The complete list of concrete nouns is, as we said before, very bountiful. When you first are told what an abstract noun is, you might have trouble coming up with an example. We may overlook tons of abstract nouns that we are in direct contact with everyday. Abstract nouns are often emotions, events, feelings, ideas, concepts, qualities, or states of being. An emotion like despair can't really be detected with your senses. Neither can an event like a holiday. A state of peace is almost impossible to detect with your ears or any human tool of perception. A human quality like courage also falls into this line of thinking.
All and all this is something that you can feel or perceive with at least one of your five sense. Did you know that we can see in three dimensions because we have two eyes? If you only had one working eye, you would see things in two dimensions only. Anything that we take in with our senses can get misconstrued based on the context of the sentence or the placement within a paragraph. They can be offered up in a singular or plural manner, again it depends upon the context of what is put forward. You will find these types of noun ever present in anything lyrical such as a poem, a song, or even a hip hop verse. That is because they are emotional well received by audiences that can grasp a well stated emotion. When you are focusing your attention on these types of words you are really trying to capture the essence of the moment in a profound and forward-thinking way. This can consume a great deal of energy and even drive you away from the primary purpose of why you began your journey.
What Types of Work Lends Themselves to the Use of Concrete Nouns?
Poets often find themselves partial to invoking emotions from their readers. This is exceedingly difficult to do when using abstract word forms. Therefore, you will see poetry lends itself to these word forms. The classification of a noun has nothing with its grammatical function, it is solely dependent on the meaning.
