What Are The Different Types Of Families?
Let's talk about one of the best phenomena today: families!
We are born and raised in groups known as families. They are the primary source of learning for us. Our personalities are highly influenced by all the members of our family.
Although family is a globally-shared concept, people still get confused regarding its exact definition. Some people believe that a household only consists of parents and children. Others think you have to be blood-related for this concept to hold up. Both of these statements are false in reality. Different types of families exist in the world today. Let's take a look at them in detail.
1. Nuclear Family - This type of household has existed for a long time now. A nuclear family consists of two parents and children living together. The children can either be biological or adopted. Plus, there are situation where you can have one or more children. Most families today have a nuclear set-up.
2. Extended Family - This type of family is pretty much a houseful deal! An extended household consists of several adults living under the same roof or in the same vicinity. They are either related by blood or marriage. The list of members may include grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren. Extended families are more prevalent in countries like India and Mexico, where living in joint families is a part of the culture.
3. Step-Family - Relationships don't always work out, right? People break up and get divorced, even when they have children together. Then, they get into new relationships and marry again. Divorced partners often decide to co-parent their children by taking turns to live or spend time with them. Moreover, adults can also remarry when their partners die. This is how step-families, also known as reconstituted families, come into existence. Step-families are becoming more common now, considering the rising rate of divorces in the world.
4. Single-Parent Family - Quite evident from the name, this type of family set-up involves single parents living with one or more of their children. Their partners may not be in the picture due to the following reasons:
- They got divorced
- Their spouse died
- Their spouse decided to leave
Children living with a single parent have higher chances of developing behavioral issues. Why? Because single parents are often busy providing for their children, which makes it difficult for them to spend quality time together.
5. Unconventional Families - Some types of families have newly entered the social scene. For example, the laws in some countries allow people of the same sex to marry now. Same-sex partners often decide to adopt children to expand their families.
