Reading programs that are rooted in phonics often produce students that can spell well. It comes down to having the ability to spell common words. Phonics learners can sound out words well and as a result most common spellings are easier for them. Irregular spellings are where they and most learners for matter have the most difficulty. The worksheets you see below will help students learn to use their phonetic skills to spell words.

Spelling New Words Worksheets To Print:

br- cl- fl- gl- – Finish out with consonant blends for bread, clock, flag, and glass.

How to Spell New Words Based on Phonics?


Phonics is relatively a new term that has been introduced to teach children how to read and write. Phonics is basically a group of sounds. When a letter produces a sound that is different from its own pronunciation, it is then called a phonic. Here are some of phonics rules that should be followed when spelling a word.


Long and Short Vowels


If there is a short vowel sound in the word, then it is possible that there is only vowel or syllable in the word. The vowel is also followed by a single consonant.

A vowel will have a long sound if it is present at the end of the word.


For example,
Go
Pro


The Silent E


There are words that often have a silent e at the end. Such words contain only one vowel or syllable. The sound that is made by that singular vowel is long.


For example,
Cake
Bake
Make
Dine
Excite


Consonant Digraphs


Consonant digraphs consist of groups of different consonants that keep appearing in words. This kind of a consonant group is pronounced in the same way. However, the letters in consonant digraphs do not sound at all like the letters themselves.


For example, ch, sh, the, ph, etc.
That chap was intelligent.
His shirt got dirty after playing in the mud.
The phone is ringing.

Consonant Blends


Consonant blends are also groups of two or more consonants. However, the consonant blends make sounds in which you can hear both letters blending together.


For example, cl, scr, gr, etc.
The children love to clap.
Do regular scrubbing of your skin.
Please grind the meat for me.


Doubling


Whenever we are adding "ed" or "ing" to a word, it is important to double the consonant of the word if the starting syllable is short.
