When students see new words, that we don’t know the meaning of, they sometimes panic and experience a smidge of anxiety. There are a couple of quick steps we can take to prepare us for this moment and look forward towards the next word we will come up against. The first thing to do is to look for some picture based clues that may be available. If you have a picture to work off of, you may better understand the context of word. You may also find word chunks that are familiar prefixes and suffixes that you can adapt from other words that you understand. How to Increase Your Word Recognition?
It is important that when children reach a certain age, they should start recognizing words. Word recognition means that you do not have to spell the entire word to make sense of it. You just know what the word and its meaning by looking at it. Here are some strategies to build your word recognition.
Play Letter Centered Games
Playing games is an interesting activity for kids. They usually do it with their full attention. This is a great technique to instill word recognition skills in young children. You can bring out some letter centered games like scrabble and start making words out of letters. Not only would this improve their word recognition skills, but it would also build their vocabulary in a fun and interesting way. After you are done playing the game, take some time out to admire the words everyone made.
Read Aloud
Reading aloud is another great way of building word recognition skills. It involves speaking and listening skills. So, you are not only reading it out loud, but you also listen to what you are saying.
Use Poetry
Poetry can help in recognizing emotional words. It can teach the value of emotions and feelings to children. Grab some of the most famous poems to teach. You can either read or sing them.
Independent Reading and Writing
One of the most effective ways to build word recognition skills in a child is to make them read and write independently. Let them explore things on their own. Teach them the importance of reading and writing, and then give them space and time to read a book of their interests. Provide them with all the necessary equipment for writing as well. Journaling is a great way to make them write every day. This would also build their vocabulary.
