Pronouns are words that replace nouns to give more life to a larger statement. They really help authors avoid being overly repetitive. They are, for the most part, short words that let us extend our writing and are also less cumbersome that basic nouns. Personal pronouns replace nouns that represent people or the words that they speak. Possessive pronouns signify a sense of ownership. You also have indefinite pronouns that do not refer to particular anything such as an person o thing.

What Is the Difference Between Personal, Possessive, and Indefinite Pronouns?


Personal Pronouns


These are substitutes for names and proper nouns in sentences. Repetitions of names in every sentence that you write to form a long passage do not seem very professional. That is why they are often used to replace proper nouns. Here are a few examples of personal pronouns that are used very commonly. They take on many different forms and come in the singular and plural varieties.


I, She, He, We, It, They, You, Me, Them, Us, Him, Her, etc.


Types of Personal Pronouns


They can be further divided into three types:


First person pronouns


First person pronouns are used when we are talking about ourselves. These are helpful when we are expressing our opinions and ideas.


For example:


Singular first-person pronouns include the following: I, me, myself, my, mine, etc.


Plural first-person pronouns include the following: We, us, ourselves, our, etc.


Second Person Pronouns


The second person pronoun is used for the person who is being addressed. This is the person we are talking to.


For example: you, yourself, yours


Third Person Pronouns


Third person pronouns are used for the person or persons that are being talked about. For example:


The singular form includes following: he, she, it, itself, etc.


Plural forms include following: they, themselves, them, their, their selves, etc.


Possessive Pronouns


Possessive pronouns show ownership. They are used to show that a certain thing belongs to a particular person. Using these terms in our writing also helps us avoid being repetitive and lulling our audience to sleep.


Here are some examples of pronouns that show possession: mine, my, ours, your, yours, his, her, hers, theirs, etc.


We can also sort these parts of speech into a strong or weak category. Strong uses tend to give a feeling of absolution, forced choice, or simply no choice. Examples of strong words would be: mine, yours, theirs, ours. Weaker forms of these words function as determiners set just in front of nouns. They serve a more passive role in sentences. Examples of weaker forms would be the words: my, his, her, its.


Indefinite Pronouns


As the name suggests, indefinite pronouns are used to indicate nouns that are not definite and specific. Rather, indefinite pronouns are vague and do not provide a clear meaning. These ambiguous references can be used by author to add a sense of drama or mystery. We often use these terms around something that is quantifiable.


For example:anybody, somebody, nobody, everybody, each, several, none, someone, everything, all, any, etc.
