After learning the sounds that particular letters of the alphabet make the natural step is to blend sounds of multiple letters together. Blending is a major fundamental skill of phonics. This helps us segment and pronounce new words to us. I also like the start and focus students on the learning blends in a series and repeating that series until we feel they have mastered a particular blend. To some degree blends are mental notes to ourselves to help us join sounds to form words. This skill can be reverse engineered to help us decode words that seem foreign to us. Students that struggle with this skill early often have trouble reading. These worksheets will help students learn to build off of blends to understand new words.

Blend Worksheets To Print:

Blender Words - This is a bit of a multiple choice exercise. You will complete the word and then draw a picture of it.

Say the Name - Start by saying each word represented by the picture and then write the blend that you hear in each word.

Blended Pictures - Which of the words contain blends? Color all of those pictures.

Two Firsts - What two letters complete the words? Use the pictures to help you determine this.

Blended Sounds - Use the pictures as your guide with this one. Is that a cross or math operation, you decide.

Matching Games - Find the matching blends in here. You will note that we used some familiar images for students.

gr- and tr- - Which blend completes the word and matches the picture?

Fill in the Blanks - Make sure to match the pictures here. The preset blends can be your guide.

S Blends - Identify the blends that fit each picture. Where does each start and go from.

Front Chunks - Say the name of each picture. Cut and glue the correct blend to complete each word.

R Blends - The letter "r" is involved in each and every blend here. Circle the starting sounds.

Beginning Blends - Begin the blends to complete the words. There are some choices to get your started.

Match the Word - Consonant blends don't contain any letters that are vowels. We are looking at word endings here.

Blending Bits - This activity has you identify where the blend exists in the position of the word.

Consonant Blends - We work on beginning blends. The images will be your guides here.

/g/ Final Sound - Look at each object below. Name the final sound of the object. If it ends in g or /g/ write "g" in the g column. If the object doesn't end in g or /g/, write the final sound in the column.

How Sounds Are Blended to Make Words

Teaching young children about sounds is the first step towards teaching them the language. Sounds are important because we use them in our daily life. Before reading and writing, children should know how to guess the meanings of different sounds. This is the primary step towards learning how to read and write.


Individual sounds are first taught to children. This is because individual sounds are much easier to grasp and understand. They are taught what sounds each letter makes. After that, they are taught how to link different sounds together to make proper words. This procedure is known as sound blending. Sound blending helps children in forming words on their own. There are a few tips and tricks that you can use to teach your child sound blending.


The CVC Technique


The easiest way of teaching a child how to blend sounds is to use the CVC technique. CVC stands for consonant vowel consonant. After your child has memorized the individual sounds of every letter, you can give him or her small three lettered words to practice sound blending. Teach them to blend the ending sound of each letter with the starting of another one. These three lettered words start and end with a consonant and have a vowel in the middle. Children would not find it very difficult to grab and blend these three sounds together.


Here are a few words, for example: mat, cup, pig cut, rug, bad, big, dug, ham, rip, cot, etc.


Consonant Clusters


The next thing to teach is the sounds of a consonant cluster. The sound of two consonants combining without a vowel might be difficult to blend. But you can teach a child the sounds of some of the most common consonant clusters in English. These include bl, br, ck, dr, gr, pr, sp, st, ng, etc. Eventually, they will be able to blend any two consonants together.
