Conjunctions are words that link parts of a sentence together. They help you really add some meat to your sentences while avoid run on sentences. They are often found in complex sentences; in fact they are the key ingredient to allow them to reach that level. The most commonly used forms of these words are: and, but, or. Students will misuse conjunctions very frequently when forming sentences. These worksheets work to help students use conjunctions in the proper form.

Introducing Students to Conjunction


A conjunction is an important element of English grammar. It is used to connect two phrases or clauses together. Sometimes conjunctions also join two sentences. In order to use conjunctions in the right manner, you need to know about its types.


Coordinating Conjunctions


Coordinating conjunctions are used to join two sentences, words, phrases, or clauses that have the same syntax. There are a total of seven coordinating conjunctions that are very easy to memorize.


For: This conjunction is used to explain the reason behind a certain action.For example, I run at the park every morning for I love to watch the sunrise.


And: This conjunction is used to add something to the sentence.For example, I went to the store to buy apples and oranges.


Nor: It is used to express an alternative idea to an already denied statement. For example, I don't work for money nor for status. I only enjoy working.


But: This conjunction is used to depict contrast in a sentence. For example, I went to the library but could not find the right book.


Or: This conjunction is used to show choice or an alternative in a sentence. For example, Should I buy apples or oranges?


Yet: This conjunction is used to introduce an idea that precedes the previous context. For example, I always take food to work, yet never seem to finish it.


So: This conjunction is used to depict consequence in the sentence. For example, I went to the gym for the last few months, so now I am able to fit in my mother's dress.


Subordinating Conjunctions


Subordinating conjunctions are used to join dependent clauses with the independent clauses. They often come first in a sentence.


For example,


Although she was right, I still refuse to apologize.


If you leave now, you will be an hour early.


Since you came to this neighborhood, we have all been very happy.


Correlative Conjunctions


Correlative conjunctions work in pairs to join two phrases or clauses.


For example,
