When you find a pair of consonants that result in a single consonant sound we call this a consonant diagraph. In many cases, this requires one letter to stay silent or forms a wild sound that neither consonant would be related to. There seems to be an endless helping of consonant diagraphs in the English language. You will find that the three most commonly used consonant diagraphs in the English language are words that start with consonant duo of sh-, ch-, and th-. In this selection of worksheets we will examine the usage and finding those single sounding consonants. You will slowly begin to see a pattern that develops and prospers as you get more into the topic.

Consonant Digraph Worksheets To Print:

"Sh" Words - Find the words in the puzzle that match each picture. Do not lose sight of the chunks of consonants in the matrix of letters.

ch, th, sh, or tch? - Which consonant chunk completes the words? Be careful with your use of ch and tch. We will be using the letter duos of ch, th, sh, or tch in this worksheet.

ch | sh | th - Which choice of diagraph completes the words? There may be a few instances where more than one fits. Besides completing words here, you will be finishing off sentences.

The Big Test - Read the story fully. Fill in the blanks with ch, sh or th. There are about twenty blanks that they would like you complete.

Fill in the Blank - More letter chunk activities. This adds for a nice level of practice. They are words that you will frequently use.

Boxed Up Sounds - Find the picture that matches the box. Some boxes might be a bit confusing. Just look at each one carefully.

Make the Word That You See - Choose the correct letters to complete each word. The pairs will be clear once you read it through.

"Ch" Words - More puzzles for you to play with. These are very fun for students. There are no letter prompts for you to work off of. You will need to rely on your visual vocabulary.

Write the Sound - Love the ears on this guy! They are look cool! Say the name of the picture out loud and try to identify where the consonant diagraph is within the word.

Mighty Thunderbolts - This one would make Zeus proud. You will color the words based on the diagraph that they exhibit and then you will use these words within a sentence.

th | ch Word Bank - Don't forget about the choices in the word bank. This is a nice cut and paste activity.

More Word Banks - Which words match the three patterns? Group them. You will work off of a vocabulary bank here.

What Are Consonant Digraphs?


Focusing on consonant digraphs is a popular method of teaching sounds to little children. A consonant digraph is a mixture of two consonant letters that produce a specific sound in the speech. These two letters combine to make a single sound. There are some specific consonant digraphs in the English language that are repetitively used in different words. These are some of the most common consonant digraphs.


CH


CH is a consonant digraph that makes three sounds when pronounced in certain words.

The very first sound is /t/. The examples of this sound are present in the following words.
Chair, chalk, catch church, etc.

The second sound that it makes is /k/. Following are examples for this sound is words. Chronological, Christian, character, etc.

The third sound that it makes is /ʃ/ (‘sh’). Words that contain this consonant digraph sound are often originated from French. Here are the examples.
Machine, champagne, Charlotte, etc.


GH


The consonant digraph GH has a simple sound that is pronounced as /g/ at the starting of the words. Here are the examples of this sound in words.


Ghost, ghouls, etc.

Another sound that this consonant makes is the sound of /f/. It is usually present at the end of the word. For example,

Rough, cough, laugh, etc.


GH is also sometimes silent in certain words. For example,
Daughter, height, might, though, etc.


PH


The consonant digraph PH is pronounced as /f/ in words. For example,
Phone, graph, phantom, etc.


TH


This consonant digraph is pronounced as /θ/ (voiceless). Here are examples,
author, cloth, breath, bath, anything, etc.
Another way to pronounce it is /ð/ (voiced). Here are the examples,
clothing, father, this, those, them, then, etc.


WH


The WH consonant digraph makes the sound of /hw/.
For example, what, when, which, why, etc.


Why Are They Important to Learn?


As you begin to progress as a reader, you will often come across vocabulary words that you have not seen before. Understanding that chunks of letters can produce certain sounds is essential to being able to pronunciate and recognize these words. This lays the base foundation for simple reading skills at the sentence level.
