Decoding Spelling Worksheets
Related ELA Standard: RF.1.3.B
Students that learn to read through the use of a phonics based system, in my experience, are often better spellers and speakers than students who have not learned through phonics. The main reason is that phonics teaches students to relate letter to the sounds that they produce. This relation is known as decoding. These worksheets will have students work with set sounds and tie them into spelling words through this strategy.

How to Use Decoding for Spelling?
Decoding is the process of relating sounds with the letters. It can be really helpful to spell out different words. Here are some ways through which you can use decoding for spelling.
Air Writing
Air writing is a great way to make your children learn the skills of decoding. It is a fun activity that can be conducted whenever there is something new to learn. When you are teaching a new word or letter to kindergarteners, allow them to sketch the shape of that letter in the air through their fingers. Make sure they do it in lower case letters because that is what appears the most in cursive writing. Writing in air will not only help them with spelling decoding, but it would also build symbol imagery in their minds.
Practice Basic Decoding Skills
Another way to become good at decoding for spelling is to practice basic decoding skills. The same old-fashioned way of practicing decoding can help a lot in boosting the word-recognizing skills in the child. After the child is done with the symbol imagery, it would be easier to practice the word list. Here are some steps that can be followed to practice decoding skills.
- Recognize the Vowels
When you speak a word out loud to the children, make them identify the vowels in it. The children should pick out the vowels from the word before they read the word. This is a great technique for anyone who is not good at decoding.
- Track the Progress
Conduct this activity a few times to track the progress of the class so that you can proceed accordingly.
- Create Errors in the Words
You can make some mistakes yourself on purpose to make this an interesting activity. Children love to point out the mistakes of their teachers. You can say a word and then ask your students if it was right. Let the children correct your mistake. Later, you can also teach them how they can correct their own mistakes when it comes to decoding.
