Having the ability to find similarities and difference between a cast of characters is one of the first steps in truly comprehending what you read. I often start by having students identify the main characters and the characters that are sidekicks (serve a supporting role). Once students are able to do this well, they can compare the commonalities between them. The hardest part is helping students to understand the distinctive motives and goals of the characters. Below you will find a really great offering of worksheets that can get students headed in the right direction with these skills.

How to Compare and Contrast Characters in Stories
Any story or movie can be made compelling through its characters. Characters are easily the most important elements of any story. The story revolves around their lives. Strong character development can make a story a hundred times more interesting. Stories usually have a few main characters. These characters often interact and are found in some sort of a challenging situation. Stories also teach us that just like humans, every character is also really different from the others. They might have some similarities on the surface, but they can be poles apart when it comes to personality.
Doing a contrast and compare between the characters of a story can help a child in developing his cognition. It makes the child smarter and gives them the ability to judge the similarities and differences between characters of real life. There are several ways through which you can compare and contrast the characters in stories. The easiest way is to focus on some of the most common traits such as following and creating a table to distinguish and compare.
Physical Traits
Physical traits mostly involve the way a person looks. You can pay focus on the lines where the author describes the appearances of the characters. The author always gives importance to describing the appearance of the character to readers. So, look for that. This includes height, weight, facial features, shoe size, hands, feet, skin color, hair color, and eye color. Sometimes it also includes the way a character dresses and his/her body language. Collect all these points and mention them in the table.
Behavioral Traits
Behavioral traits include everything related to their emotional state. This includes the way a character responds to a certain situation and the decisions it makes. It also includes the feelings of the character for example, how it feels after a certain situation.
