There are a large number of vowel combinations that produce completely different sounds. These are known as vowel teams. To confuse the situation even more there are a few consonant and constant pairs that represent certain vowel sounds as well. Vowel teams account for a great number of spelling errors. As a result the improper use of a vowel team can hinder reading comprehension and writing. We encourage teachers to start teaching the more common vowel teams. We would especially spend more time on those teams that have a good grounding in spelling syntax. This will lead students to be more confident with their written language. These worksheets can really help students be successful with the usage of vowel pairs and adjoining consonants.

Vowel Team Worksheets To Print:

Hungry Longneck - Use one of the ways to make the long I sound below to complete each word.

Silent e - When you add an E to some words, it changes the short vowel to a long vowel sound.

Word Bank Me! - Color each of the pictures based on the key code. You will need a red and blue color available.

The Long O - Use the long O sound spellings to fill in the blanks for each word. We provide you with an example of the teams that are most used.

Fill In the Blank - Use "ee" or "ea" to complete words and use them in a sentence. They are then used properly.

What are the Vowel Team Conventions?


In order to ease the process of learning how to read and write, the English alphabets have been divided into two parts. One is vowels and second is consonants. There are a total of five vowel alphabets including a, e, i, o, and u. On the other hand, all the remaining alphabets are known as consonants.


Vowels are easy to memorize. They are the most frequently used letters in different words. The vowel sounds are taught first so that the young minds can make sense of the language. However, there is a set of alphabets that include one or more vowels and that appears in a lot of words. These sets of alphabets are known as vowel team conventions. These vowel team conventions are pronounced the same in a word. They can be learned assets and then whenever the child identifies one in a unique word, he or she will be able to pronounce it without any difficulty.
