Using Root Words To Define Words Worksheets

A root word is the part of a word that can be used to form new words with the simple addition of a prefix or suffix. Many root words can also stand alone by themselves. We can often look at new words and recognize roots within them. Understanding the definition of these roots can often lead us to understand the definition of the word themselves. The worksheets below will help you work off of these root word skills.
Using Root Words Worksheets To Print:
Using Root Words as Clues – Find the root and work off of it to understand new words.
able, ment, less – Suffixes that tell us: able to be, the act of, and being without.
Building New Words – Develop an understanding for how word meanings are changed by prefixes.
Growing Words – A root has been planted. Now we develop those roots into trees.

Creating New Meanings with Prefixes and Suffixes – Work off of the examples that you see.
Root Words – For each root word below, add as many prefixes or suffixes as you can to create new words. Use the prefixes and suffixes below for ideas.
Get to the Root of the Matter – Underline the root word in each of the words. Then fill in the blank in the sentences with the correct word, to show you understand what the word means.
Making New Words with Suffixes – A suffix is a word part that is added to the end of a root word. A suffix usually changes the meaning of the word.
What's the Meaning? – Match each suffix to its meaning by writing the letter in the blank.
Making New Words with Prefixes – Add the correct prefix to each word below to change the meaning of the word to its opposite.
