In this time of digital revolution students often don’t know how to navigate the use of a book. A glossary is like a specific search engine for a book. When you use a glossary properly you can find exactly what you are looking for quickly in a text. Terms are usually listed alphabetic and they highlight the topics within mostly nonfiction books. Dictionaries are helpful not only because they help introduce us to the meaning of new words, but also how to use those words in our own language by explaining the contextual use of the term. Dictionaries can also help us understand languages of the past and get a better understanding of history. These worksheets will help students learn how to best use dictionaries and glossaries.

Using the Glossary – A glossary is an alphabetical list of words accompanying a book, story or paper. Read the article below. Then use the glossary to answer the questions.

Glossaries – Some books have a list of words in alphabetical order called a glossary in the back. It contains definitions of words used in the book.

Using the Dictionary – The dictionary gives you a lot of information about a word besides just its definition. Study the picture below. Then match each part of the dictionary page to its correct name.

What are Dictionaries and Glossaries Used for?


Glossary


It is not a very good feeling when you are reading your course book and you come across a technical term or an unknown word that you do not know the meaning of. This situation can be extremely frustrating because it can become a hindrance in your understanding of the topic. You might feel you are stuck and cannot go any further because you do not understand what is being said.


Some course books, academic books, and other such scientific books have certain words written in bold in the text. You might have noticed this before and wondered why are they written in bold. Sometimes, the words are also marked. If you ever notice such words in your books, then remain calm whenever you come across an unfamiliar word. This is because these words are mentioned at the end of the book along with their meaning. You will find a few pages at the very end of the book with all the bolded words and their meaning. This part of the book is known as a glossary. The purpose of the glossary is to mention all the commonly unknown and unfamiliar words at the back of the book to help students understand the meanings. You can always go back to the glossary if you find a word you are unfamiliar with.


Dictionary


Not all the books have glossaries in them and not all the words that you find difficult will be mentioned in the glossary. A glossary has only a limited number of words. If you ever feel stuck on a word that is not mentioned in the glossary, it is always advisable to refer to a dictionary. A dictionary is a book that contains all the words in the English language along with their meanings. The words in a dictionary are mentioned in alphabetical order.
