Main Idea Of Multiparagraph Text Worksheets
Related ELA Standard: RI.2.2
Students, up to this point, have focus on grasping the main theme from a single paragraph. This is usually pretty simple because the paragraph lacks any level of transition within the topic itself. The skill of seeing through several works of text forces students to come up with a cumulative theme and then push to find a sub-theme within it. These worksheets help put students through the process of constructing main ideas from the themes that are provided.

How to Pull the Main Idea from Text?
It is important to determine the main idea of the text in order to know what the writer is trying to say. Without the main idea, you cannot clearly comprehend the text. It might also get boring to read. Sometimes, the main idea is so clearly stated that you don't have to look for it. However, some texts have their main idea hidden in the block of texts. You cannot really guess it by looking at the topic. Here are some tips to pull the main idea from the text.
Look at the First Line
Usually, writers put the main idea of the text in the first line. This is to make readers know what they are about to read. If the topic does not give you the entire theme of the text, then the first line is where you should be looking. Usually, the complete idea of the text is summarized in a single line. It might contain some facts or something to trigger your emotions. Pay attention to what sort of emotions are being triggered through the text.
Focus On the Repetitive Words
Sometimes the main idea is not even in the first line or first paragraph. If you are halfway through the text and still don't understand what the main idea is, then try to pay attention to the words. Look for certain words that are being repeated again and again. Focus on what message is being portrayed with the help of those words. This could be the biggest hint for knowing what the entire text is about.
Look at the Last Line
Usually, writers construct their writings in a way that would evoke a feeling of suspense. This is because the writer wants the reader to read the entire text. Read the last line of the text. That is usually where the main idea is hiding.
