Search engines literally lead us on our daily lives. I cannot tell you how many times I needed help and a quick search of well thought out search term did just that for us. There are also times when I have preformed a search and was given completely inaccurate information that if I proceeded with would have left me in a worse situation than when I started. These worksheets will help students understand how to use the features found within text and search tools in an effective manner.

The Internet is a vast web of information flowing from several sources and millions of websites. However, finding relevant information from the desired website can be difficult; this is where search engines strike in with millions of relevant searches. For students, it is essential to learn how to use a search engine to learn something new.


How to Use a Search Engine?


Most search engines work the same way. You enter the word in the search engine bar and millions of results show up. The words you insert are known as keywords and the results are known as hits.


Surefire Tips to Help Make the Most of a Search


1. Precise Keywords:


Never insert long sentences in the search engine bar. Rather take out particular keywords you want to search details about. For instance, never type dinosaur rather focus on writing T-Rex dinosaurs. The particular keyword will help you to lead to a specific web pages having the most relevant knowledge about the subject.


2. (-) operator:


If you want to look for particular subject information and are getting irrelevant and unexpected results, try using some powerful tricks including Boolean operators like (-) while searching for words in search engine bar. This will help you get the most relevant results and eliminate all the unwanted material. For instance, you looking for land dinosaurs. Start searching like dinosaurs-land dinosaurs. It will bring you a focused result on land dinosaurs.


3. Quotation Mark:


Sometimes phrases and or quotes remain in our mind. To look for the exact content online, use quotation marks "..." and insert the half words you remember in it. The search would definitely bring you results most relevant to it. For instance "Dinosaurs lived during the Paleozoic era".


4. AutoComplete:


Search engines are fed with many relevant web pages and their meta description. If you enter a specific word, the search engine may drop down a list of suggestions to auto-complete the sentence. Thus, as you find the relevant suggestion instantly choose it as the search engine will show you top views results.


5. Search on Multiple Engines:


Google, Bing, and Yahoo, etc. are some of the most famous search engines throughout the world. However, Duck Duck Go is one of the most popular search engines for kids. Hence, look for varied information results from different search engines.
