One of the most unexpected things that I came across is student's reactions to writing narratives. Some students love them because they allow you to really use your imagination. I was one of those students, so it is hard for me to fathom that there is also a large portion of students that cannot stand writing narrative. Start strong whenever you write any piece that is the key to keeping your readers fully engaged. The worksheets in this section will help students start to get a feeling for the process of writing these.

Three Wishes – You are walking through the woods with a friend and find an oil lamp lying on the ground.

To Forgive or Not to Forgive – Cindy and Jessica are your best friends. You three always eat lunch together and jump rope together at recess.

Toys – Cartoons and movies show toys coming to life and acting the way humans do in certain situations.

Which One? – Choose 1 of the pairings in the boxes below and write about which is your favorite.

The Steps to Writing Narrative Introductions


Narrative essays refer to write-ups that reflect or narrate any story. Narrative essays are written from a predefined point of view of an author and thus represent how the author feels about the specific topic. Sometimes sensory details are also written in narrative essays which keep the readers hooked in the elements and plot of the story.


However, they are misinterpreted with descriptive essays sometimes. To cater this issue one should write narrative essays with an attractive and effective introduction to hook up the reader.


A narrative introduction should have some specific characteristics that provide an opportunity for impactful opening. These characteristics may include:


- A narrative essay introduction should be catchy to instantly hook the reader's attention.


- It should reflect the narrator or author's tone, voice, mood and point of view.


- It should be dramatic and interesting.


- It should have introduced or explained the conflicts an author wishes to portray or address in his/her story.


Here are some necessary steps to ensure all the above characteristics while writing a narrative introduction.


1. Action: Start your narrative introduction in a dramatic tone and explain the middle of the action. It will develop curiosity in your reader to find out the pre and post happenings. For example, Breath in and Breath Out!


2. Shocking Expression: Start your narrative introduction with something shocking to amaze your readers. The shocking expression may also include some secret revelations or facts and figures. For example, Cornea is the only body part which does not have a blood supply. It receives oxygen from the air.


3. Misleading Clause: Give a tantalizing or misleading clause as the opening for your narrative introduction. You can target your reader with mental tricks and keep them hooked to read further. For example, the sun rose from the west that day.


4. Withhold Information: Try to withhold information and create mystery or suspense in your introduction. Do not write all the objectives and plot twist at the beginning of your essay and depict what you will be covering. Make gradual development with the story.


5. Problem Introduction: Introduce a problem about a certain topic in the introduction so that he doesn't get bored with finding the reason for reading such a long passage. Inform him about the problem so that he can interpretative with the development of the story.


How to Write Narrative Introductions


Here are some ways to write narrative introductions.


Make It Interesting


The most important tip to know for writing the introduction part of a narrative essay is to make it interesting. This is because the introduction part has so much significance attached to it. The readers are going to decide from the first line if they want to read any further or not. Your starting words should be attention-grabbing and interesting. They should ignite the curiosity of the readers to go further into the story. You can also make the introduction a little relevant for your target readers. It will help in maintaining their interest.


Use A Quote


Using a quote as an introductory statement is a good idea for starting a narrative story. It will help the readers in making some sense of what they will be reading. You should make sure to use a quotation that is relevant to the story that you have written. Also, do not forget to give credits for the quotation.


Start With A Question


One of the best ways to ignite the curiosity of the readers is to start your narrative story with a question. This is because questions are famous for keeping the readers interested because they are curious to know the answer. You can create an interesting question that leads towards the main theme of your story.


Present A Shocking Scenario


If you want to experiment with something new, you can skip everything else and introduce your narrative story with a shocking scenario. You can use a scene from the conflict or climax in the beginning. Keep in mind to not mention everything regarding that scene in the introduction. Give your readers a reason to keep reading.


Mention the Settings


Once you are done with introducing the story, it is time to mention the setting. You can mention elements like the culture, region, weather, and personalities in the introduction of the narrative story.
