What to Do When You Run into Confusing Words?
There are literally thousands of words in the English language. It is almost impossible to memorize them all. Some basic ones are taught to everyone in school, but as you progress in your academic and professional life, you will start to notice many unfamiliar terms if you do not have a good vocabulary.
Fortunately, it is not necessary to memorize every word in the English language in order to know the meaning. You can also use many other techniques to guess the meaning of any confusing or unfamiliar words. Here are some tips and tricks to help you whenever you run into confusing words.
Use a Dictionary
One of the most obvious tips is to look for the meaning of the word in a dictionary. A dictionary is a book that contains all the terms of the English language along with their meanings and definitions. You can easily find any word in the dictionary and get to know the meaning of it. Dictionaries can be very helpful. It is advisable to carry a pocket-sized dictionary or download the dictionary app on your mobile phone or tablet.
Use Context Clues
There will be situations in your life where you won't be able to use a dictionary to find the meaning of a confusing word. Let's say you are giving an exam where you are not allowed to use a dictionary or mobile phone. Here, you can take help from context clues. Context clues are elements in the passage or text that help you in figuring out the meaning of the confusing word yourself. You can reread the sentence; look for synonyms or antonyms, or other such hints provided by the author.
Use Affixes
Almost all words have affixes attached to them. You can separate the root word, suffix, and prefix from the word and combine the meaning of all three to find out the meaning of the actual word.
