Core Standard

Evaluating what you read is a big task for any middle schooler. There are many factors to consider. The most common task students see, at this level, is to trace an event and evaluate if an argument or a specific section of text is solid. The best way to attack this is to look for sound reasoning that is based on evidence that the author sets in motion. Your best means is to see if enough thought was put into presenting evidence. These worksheets will help seventh graders apply reading standards to work that they are assessing.

Making and Supporting Assertions – You are asked to push in a direction of your choice.

The Thinking Log – These are great to use a few times a week.

Fiction Vs. History – One is a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character, and the other is a historical account of the same period.

Supporting Propositions – A three pronged approach often works well.

Comparing Historical and Fictional Accounts – Compare the thoughts of the work purely based on the setting.

Evaluating Author's Claims – Is there a significant set of work put in here?

Weighing Evidence – Put all your thoughts to get work here.

Gorilla Accounts – Help the gorilla spread his thoughts out to the world.

Does History Say Differently? – Discuss three ways that the accounts are the same.

What Reading Skills Should 7th Graders Have?


Seventh grade is a period of great importance for a child's academic life. By the end of seventh grade, a child should be able to read fluently so that he or she is fully prepared for middle school and for his or her whole educational life. During seventh grade, a child needs to read a lot of fiction as well as nonfiction books to build higher level skills in reading. Following are some basic reading skills a seventh grader must possess:


Locating Prefixes and Suffixes


A seventh grader must be able to locate prefixes and suffixes while reading. He or she should also be able to locate root words and other compound words.


Locating the Main Idea


Seventh graders must also have the ability to easily locate and understand the main idea of the reading material in detail.


Using Syllables


While reading, if a seventh grader finds a difficult word to read, he or she should know how to divide such a word into small parts and then read it. Using syllables to read a hard word is a better technique than asking for someone's help or reading it by spelling the word.


Pronunciation


Seventh graders must be able to pronounce difficult and hard words accurately. If one cannot pronounce a word at all, he or she should ask someone for help without hesitation.


Reading Loudly With Expressions


Many seventh graders are pro at reading but only by heart. If they are asked to read aloud they hesitate. Therefore, a seventh grader must be able to read in front of other people with appropriate facial expressions.


Noticing Homographs


While reading, seventh graders must be able to notice homographs and should be able to draw out the accurate meaning of that word from the sentence.
