In most cases spelling tests and tasks, for that matter, have pretty much seen their last day of light in middle school. As students advance into their high school years, spelling is an expected skill rather than something that is drilled and tested by teachers. Being able to spell well, at this level, is expected as much as being able to read and write. By the completion of the 8th grade we expect students to have mastery over the spelling of approximately 15,000 words. We also expect that they can make transition with all of those words including adjusting tenses and timing words. Students that fall behind should get on board with flashcards and make sure they know all their words. These worksheets will help students prep for their last year of formal spelling assessments.

That's The Spell... - Find the words that have the proper spelling. These are twenty-two vocabulary terms that you should know well.

Reverse Look Up! - What vocabulary word are we describing here? Read the definitions below. Write the correct word on the line.

Word Scramble - Unscramble all of the words that are presented to you. Put them back in the correct order. Then choose three of them to use in a sentence.

Word Search - There are 18 terms stuffed in there. Pick them out and then use each of them in a sentence. Not as easy as it looks!

Spelling Challenge - Fix that single word in every sentence. You will write it correctly on the line.

Spelling Practice - Some of the words below are spelled correctly and some are not. Write the correct spelling of the incorrectly‐spelled terms on the line.

Sentence Search - You can either use the puzzle to help you with the sentences or vice versa.

The Spelling Bee - Jane, Hank and Carl are practicing to compete in the school spelling bee.

Crossword Puzzle - Use the clues to fill in the crossword puzzle. This is something you would see in a newspaper.

Be the Teacher - If a word is spelled incorrectly, circle it, and write the correct spelling on the line below.

Spell Check! - Underline the words that are spelled correctly. Some of these terms may escape you, just follow your standard spelling rules to help you out.

Theatre Camp - Terri has written a postcard to her friend Wendy to tell her about what is going on at theater camp, but she has misspelled a few words.

Spelling It Out - If necessary, you may use a dictionary to help you.

-able / -ible Ending - Think of a word ending in the suffix -able or -ible that matches each definition. Then write the word on the line provided.

How 8th Graders Can Become Better Spellers


There are several strategies that students can learn to make them more efficient spellers. The technique that comes first to mind is called Phonetic Chunking. This is where teachers encourage students to break the vocabulary term apart into the clearly identifiable sounds. As they begin to sound out and spell at the same time, students will begin to recognize similar chunks. This will help them learn new vocabulary much faster and become more accurate with their spelling of these terms. A simple yet remarkably effective strategy is simply to have students write the word as much as possible, you would be surprised about the power of muscle memory. This form of rote learning is amazingly effective for a good proportion of students. We encourage students to learn common root words and learning the prefixes and suffixes that attach themselves to these roots. They can help you learn countless new terms.


What are the Toughest Words for 8th Graders to Learn to Spell?


8th grade is the most crucial year for a student's language development. Eight grade provides students with a great platform for high school and therefore, during this grade, students need to put all their efforts into exploring new vocabulary to develop a grip on language in the future.


8th graders should have a very strong vocabulary. They should know as many words as possible to help them with high school. 8th graders should focus on tough terms whether they are short or long in length of letters. Below you will find some of the short and long tough words that provide a base for language development but most of the 8th graders find these difficult to understand and memorize:


The Short Tough Terms


Some words, even when they are simple to spell, are so confusing that it is difficult for the students to learn and memorize them. These small but difficult terms are widely used in essays, stories, and other written content. Students must know these small tough terms to use them in their daily as well as academic life. Some short toughest words every 8th grader should know include colonel, enormity, Ironic, dilatory, uncanny, conscientious, martinet, lieutenant, abject, abjure, accede, accost, acumen, adamant, alias, alveoli, clamor, cleave, bilk, dour, elegy, foil, wily, engender, truss, genre, titular, brewery, solecism, pabulum, sedulous, seraphic, dilate, etc.


The Long Tough Terms


Students, up to their seventh grade, are afraid of long words. They usually skip such terms and prefer using short words instead. However, eight graders should know some of the most commonly long and tough words since it is crucial to their academic success in the future. There are tons of long tough words that all the 8th graders should have knowledge of. Some of those words include schizophrenia, indefatigable, aberration, phenomenon, abnegation, paraphernalia, adumbrate, aggrandize, ambivalent, anamnesis, gasconade, intransigent, anachronistic, entrepreneur, antediluvian, approbation, circumlocution, vicissitude, ubiquitous, etc.
