One thing I found as a teacher that has taught reading via two different strategies (Phonics and Whole Language) is that students that learn to read via Whole Language end up poor spellers. Phonics roots itself in sounding out new words. This rises itself to students sounding out words that they are trying to spell. These worksheets will help students learn how to use phonics to help spell new words.

What is phonics?

Phonics is taught as the basics to children who are learning to read. Phonics help children identify different sounds which in turn, help to distinguish one word from the other. They basically give the child letter-sound awareness which aids in reading. Sound and symbol relationship does exist in English to an extent, but there are words that do not sound the way they are spelt. For this reason, phonetic spellings are introduced.


Phonetic Spelling


Phonetic spelling is spelling the words the way they sound. Every letter has its own distinctive sound in English, but there are also combinations of letters that are pronounced different in words. Phonic reading plays a vital part in helping children spell a word. It is not possible for anyone to spell a word correctly till the sound of letters in those words is unclear.


For example, in the word 'parrot' the letter 'p' is pronounced as /p/. However, in other word 'phone', 'p' comes in combination with 'h' and together they form 'ph' which makes the /f/ sound.


Likewise, in the word 'soup' the letter 's' makes the /s/ sound, but when 's' is paired with 'h' in the word 'ship' it makes a distinctive sound.


There are many such words in English Language that when paired with another have a distinguished sound. These are called diagraphs and some example of diagraphs are cheese, rough, sing, sphere and queen.


There are some phonetics that are pronounced differently in American English and British English. The standard American accent is rhotic which means that American pronounces the sound of 'r' while British pronoun the letter 'r' when it is followed by a vowel.
