Verbs are words of action or movement. The antonyms to most verbs are hard to spot or figure out on your own. For example: "Tom dropped the pan." In this sentence, we need to find the opposite of the verb "dropped". I can think of a few verbs that antonyms. "picked up" or "grabbed" comes to mind. The antonyms to adjectives are much easier to come by because they are description words and often give off an attitude or emotional state to the reader. These worksheets will help students relate the antonyms of both verbs and adjectives.

How Do You Relate Verbs and Adjectives to Their Antonyms?

First and foremost, we must differentiate between verbs, adjectives and antonyms before we can proceed further and discuss how they may be linked.


The word verb, like many others in the English language, is derived from the Latin term verbum. It is any word that is applied to describe an action or state, and which forms the basic part of the predicate of a sentence as well.


An example of a verb can be shown in the following sentence: Gregory is throwing a football. The term throwing is classified as an action verb and is used to denote what Gregory is doing. Likewise, if we state that a cat ran across the living room, the word ran is the verb in this case.


An adjective is a word that essentially describes or alters a noun in a sentence. Facile examples of adjectives include small, miniscule and huge or gargantuan. While the first two denote something that is tiny, the latter ones are opposites. In other words, they are antonyms.


This brings us to the third and final concept - antonyms. These are words that are opposites of another word. Therefore, the antonym of the term agree will be disagree and the antonym of belief will be disbelief.


Students must be taught the distinction between the aforementioned concepts at the earliest instance in classrooms. They must be informed the purpose of verbs, adjectives and antonyms. This can be accomplished by giving them worksheets that contain exercises which makes it easier for them to comprehend.


Other concepts which will also be included are synonyms, which are words that have the same meaning and nouns, which shows a class of people, places or things respectively.
