Early on in a student's writing career they will need to share new information with other people and in some they will need to explain the steps or procedures (explanatory) for the reader to follow. Kindergartens often start exploring new forms of writing by starting with informative pieces where they are just cover general aspects on a basic topic. The best strategy to follow here is to begin by focusing on getting all the information across and then go back and fix any issues that you run across. These worksheets will help students work on these new writing forms to them.

What Is Informative and Explanatory Writing?

It is really important that the informative and explanatory style of writing is taught in the classroom. This is because informative and explanatory writing has the ability to open up the minds of the students. They get to pour in every detail of the concept and hence the topic is conveyed with complete information through the writing. Informative and explanatory writing has future benefits for the students as well. It allows them to communicate freely which would help them in their careers.


The informative and explanatory writing contains as many details as possible. The main purpose of it is to provide knowledge. When writing an informative paragraph, the writer mostly answers the questions of why, how, and when. Informative writing does not aim to change the mindset of the reader, instead, it gives clear cut information on a topic.


A good informative essay has a catchy introduction to grab the reader's interest. It has straightforward information regarding the main topic. It has facts and quotations to provide authentic information. Informative writing is done in a formal tone with appropriate vocabulary.


Here is an example of an informative and explanatory style of writing:


The day was 21st of July in the year 1969, Neil Armstrong woke up with the stars in his surroundings. He was the part of the Apollo 11 space mission and today he was going to become the first man ever to walk on the surface of the moon. He was on the Apollo 11 that was launched on the 16th of July from Earth into outer space. Amongst his crews were Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collin. They landed on the moon a day before the plan. Upon stepping his first foot on the moon, Neil Armstrong declared "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
