In English language requires us to capitalize words at different times. We know to provide the first CAPS on proper nouns. This includes a name of a person, a targeted place, or a thing. We also use CAPS in titles of a movie, book, or other common publication. The first word of any salutation gets a capital first letter. These worksheets on the other hand, focus on first words of sentences and the letter "I" when used as a pronoun.

WHY DO WE CAPITALIZE FIRST WORD AND THE PRONOUN "I"?

The English language has been popular for centuries and has evolved into modern English which we use in our day to day conversations. Around the world, English is considered the first choice of foreign language and it is estimated that about one-third of the world's population now speaks English.


The most fundamental English language rule is to use capitalization on the first letter of the sentence. In printing, this is known as the sentence case where the first letter of the sentence is capitalized and the rest are lower case letters with a few exceptions such as proper nouns, adjectives and pronouns.


Capitalization rule is also applied when a quotation, which is a complete sentence, is inserted within a larger sentence. However, if the quotation is a phrase, the first letter does not need to be capitalized. It is with the development of printing press in Europe that capitalization of letters was standardized to distinguish one sentence from the other because punctuation was not commonly used at that time or to make the text more visually appealing and readable.


In German, 'ich' was used as a personal pronoun and with the evolving language people started writing different variations of this personal pronoun such as, 'Ich', 'ich', 'Ic'. Towards the end of the Middle English era, the consonant 'ch' was dropped and the personal pronoun was written and pronounced as 'I'.


The letter 'I' is the only pronoun that has been capitalized. Some historians are of the view that because it signifies the importance of the writer who is using it, it needs to be capitalized. While many believed that if a lowercase 'i' was used in a text, it would appear to be weak on its own, hence the capitalization.
