A blend, in the phoneme sense, is when we are able to isolate individual sounds within a word. These sounds are referred to as chunks or word segments. You can often break just about any word into many different parts. Single syllable words are hard to come by, but when you first locate one many different forms will follow. The onset is the portion of the term found just before the vowel. The rime is everything that comes after the vowel. These worksheets cover all these various phonetic skills. We will explore how to determine and use these sounds.

Topic Worksheets To Print:

-ig Words - Fill in the missing letter to make the word. You should try this without using the letter bank to assist you at first. If you need it, it is there for you.

Match Up - Draw lines to match up each onset and rime. Use the word pictures for clues. In the end, you will form a new word.

Cut and Glue! - Cut and glue to match the onsets and rimes. I would align them first before you break out the paste.

Which Doesn't Belong? - Look at the box in each row. Then draw a circle around the picture that does not begin with the sound in the box.

Sound Sort - Say the name of each picture out loud. Underline the onset in each word. Then cut and glue them into the correct shape according to their rimes.

Making Words - Choose from the letters provided to fill in the onset for each rime. Each choice has one natural place to fill.

Splitting Up Words - Say the name of each picture out loud. Then look at the word. On the first line, write the onset. On the second line, write the rime. The first one has been done for you.

"B" Words - Cut and glue each "b" onto the line to form a word. Say each word out loud. This is a worksheet that will let you get into good habits.

Puzzle Fun - Cut out the puzzle pieces. Put the pieces together correctly to spell words. Use the pictures as clues.

"-ock" Words - Say the name of each picture out loud. What sound does it start with? Cut and glue the correct onset into each box.

Splitting and Building Words - Say the name of each picture out loud. Then cut the word into two parts and glue the parts on the lines in order above. On the last line, write the word. Follow the example.

Make a Word - Use the letters below to make new words. All the words will build on to the -at suffix. There are letters provided to assist you with matching the pictures.

Building "S" Words - Look at the onset in each block. Color each block that contains a rime that makes a word. In some cases there are more than one word that can be formed. Make note of those times.

"-og" Words - Use the letters in the box to make new terms that line up with what is presented in each of the images. Write the new term on the line.

Let's Fly a Kite! - Draw a circle around the onset and underline the rime found in each of the vocabulary terms that are found on the worksheet.

What Is Onset-rime Segmentation?

What is onset?


This is the initial letter of any word that comes before the vowel or the ending consonant. For example, c in the word 'cat' is an onset. It is the consonant sound or sounds at the start of the syllable. Not all words may have onsets and the syllables without an onset are termed as having zero onset.


What is rime?


This part of the syllable includes a vowel and any consonant that comes after a vowel. It is basically the letters that follow the onset. For example, at in the word 'cat' is a rime.


Why teach Onset-Rime?


Giving an understanding of onset and rimes, children can identify a common group of letters in the words. Understanding this concept, children will be able to decipher words and also spell new words as they learn to write. A clear understanding of onset and rimes can help children comprehend different word families along with a command over reading and spelling skills.


Onset-Rime Segmentation


It is vital for a child to learn segmentation skills in order to acquire reading capability and development. When the sound of each word is isolated, slowly saying each sound in a word, this is called segmentation, for example, c-a-t. When segmenting onset and rimes, children will identify onsets in 'spoon' and 'flat' as sp and fl which are made up of two phonemes. They may also identify single onset words such as c in 'cat'.
