The nature of our favorite characters will often move us to feel a certain emotion towards them. We can either care for them deeply or not attribute much value at all towards them. These thoughts can quickly change when they take on their own actions. Venn diagrams are very helpful tools that help us quickly compare many attributes of a character. These worksheets will help us learn to compare an assortment of characters in the story we read.

WHAT QUALITIES SHOULD YOU COMPARE BETWEEN CHARACTERS IN A STORY?

In fiction, a character is defined as a person, animal or object that takes the story forward. The development of character, its overall personality and the situation around him hook the readers to the story. If the audience cannot relate to the character, the story goes down the drain.


To compare characters in a story, you will need to analyze them and look for details such as the traits, behaviors and dialogues of the characters to comprehend their roles in the story better.


COMPARING PHYSICAL TRAITS


The first way to compare is to scrutinize every tiny detail about the physical appearance or features of a character's body. Physical traits include eye color, skin color, features, overall look, height, weight, hair color, etc. To compare two characters, you should look for similarities and differences keeping in mind the physical traits. This is because focusing on physical traits will highlight the personality of the character and can help the audience better understand his role in the story.


COMPARING BEHAVIORAL TRAITS


The second way to compare two characters revolves around the actions and choices the character makes in the story. With their actions they can show generosity, integrity, devotion and commitment, love and kindness, and sincerity and self-control.


COMPARING USING CHARACTER DIALOGUES


Just like a conversation between two people can tell a lot about them, the dialogues also speak a lot about a character. The tone of his voice, how he responds, how often does he respond, the desires and motives of a character are revealed through what he chooses to say, his background and choice of words or use of slang words.
