The “All About Me” theme celebrates individual children for who they are and their unique character and abilities. Everyone is good at something in life, this is their time to reflect inward and determine what makes them special. This is one of those themes that you start early in your school year. This helps students quickly gain awareness and acceptance of their peers throughout the classroom. This leads to quick friendships and helps people identify with one another. Starting this topic early in the school year can help teachers build a sense of community and connection between students while still work on the core skills of the curriculum. Let’s face it kids love talking about themselves and this is a great way to explore a wide array of different language arts areas with them in a very motivating way. These worksheets will help students explore themselves, their qualities, feelings, and share who they are with their classmates.

Why Teach an "All About Me" Unit?
For younger children this unit can be super impactful to help them grow internally as well as in class. Students begin school as a mostly blank slate. We want to encourage them to communicate and share. A great way to do this is to engage them with one of their favorite subjects, themselves. I would highly recommend that anyone working this age level consider unit an “All About Me” unit for several substantial reasons:
Support Self Esteem - At this age level children are fragile internally. Being raised by screens of phone and tablets have really dampened the amount of time that parents spend with their children helping them to be self-aware and having positive mental health. A recent University of Iowa study found that youngsters hear ten times as many negative statements a day, then positive statements. Depending on their home life, I found that many children have a low self-value. We all became teachers to at some point in of lives to help children. This is your chance. I probably spend more time on this unit than is necessary, but I have found that when done right, it can have a substantial impact on my student’s self-worth. By the age of 5 students form a sense of self-esteem the mass majority of children have a positive starting self-esteem and that gets challenged as they grow.
Form a Community - Early in the school year there are many more new faces that we do not know as opposed to what we do know. As we learn about one another, that quickly changes. Students with similar interests will gravitate towards one another and friendships will be forged. This simple unit can instantly create peer groups. The overall process needs to stress universal acceptance of one another for our similarities and our differences. This is a great way to help students understand the concept of friendship. It is also an excellent way to begin to understand that forming a positive climate and community can greatly benefit you.
Show and Share - This is a great unit to help students build their oral communication and presenting skills at a young age. It often involves a great number of art activities which we encourage that students share with the class. It is important to help students become comfortable with sharing their work with others. It is of the utmost importance that you have every student feel respected and valued as they share. Since this is often their first time presenting, they will be shy and reluctant to do so. If you are encouraging and patient with your students, they will slowly grow much more comfortable with the concept.
