The long vowel U is sounded out just as the word "you". Long vowels are pronounced in the same way that their letters are pronounced. This sound has the least number of common ways to make the sound. Long U can be found in words like unicorn and unique, but they can also be found in multiple syllable words such as dual and uniform. In most circumstances teachers will teach the concepts and uses of consonants before they tackle vowels. That is because there is much less inconsistency of sound ranges with constants. When we get to vowels, the concept of long and short sounds is often the first hurdle. This is a collection of worksheets that really hones on the use and nature of long u sound and the words that it is found in.

Long U Worksheets To Print:

You Sound Words - How many long U sound words can you make by adding letters to each set of letters below? Add as many letters as you like, anywhere, to create a new word. You don’t have to fill in every space where there is a line.

The Long U Sound - Name those pictures! Say the name of each picture out loud. Circle each word and picture that makes the sound of interest.

The Word Bank - There is a whole bunch of onomatopoeia going on here. Find the sets of words that rhyme with the bolded word and write them on the lines.

Spelling Patterns - I never noticed how dynamic the u and e vowel were. How many long U words can you think of that follow each spelling pattern below?

Big or Little? - Don't let the size of the picture interfere with how you interpret it. Say the name of each picture out loud. If you hear the long U sound, circle the picture and write the word on the line.

How to Express a Long U Sound


For people that are not native to learning English, it is a difficult and in some cases overwhelmingly hard language to comprehend. In many cases things just don’t make sense. In the case of vowel sounds this is prevalent. Many phonetic sounds are spelled several different ways. The long vowel u is pronounced like the word "you", but there are at least three different ways to spell it, and some even say four.


You will find that roughly three different combinations of letters that generate over 90 percent of the words that contain a long u vowel sound. Most words just have a word that ends in the vowel "e" such as the words: "capsule", "assume", and "minute". Many different words end in the vowel group of ue on the end of words and produce a long u sound. Take for instance the words argue, tissue, and argue. The long u is not only present, but crazy evident. The last way to be presented with the long vowel u sound is through words that contain the ultimate vowel pair -ew. You will hear sounds like this prevalent in such words as: nephew, stew, and pew. The last and most obvious spelling is just the letter "u" such as in unicorn, union, and university.
