Third Grade Spelling Worksheets
Related ELA Standard: L.5
The foundation of third grade vocabulary is rooted in phonics and word recognition. The goal with spelling is identify the various parts of a word and see if a root is present. If we can recognize a root word, are there prefixes or suffixes attached to the term at some point. Flashcards can be very helpful for learning new terms that are unfamiliar. My students find that online flashcards work best for them. Presenting the terms in a unit-based system definitely works the best and helps students progress with new words. I also encourage students to keep a new term journal and write down any term that they come across in reading that they are unacquainted with. Print these worksheets to help your third-grade students master new vocabulary terms.

Third Grade Spelling Tips
The knowledge gained during third grade helps one throughout his or her educational and professional life. Third-graders must focus on new vocabulary words and should try to learn their meanings as well as spellings. Most of the third graders encounter a little difficulty in spelling many words. Therefore, some spelling tips are given below that will help the third-graders to easily and efficiently spell hard words.
Increasing Reading
Third-graders must read bedtime stories, fiction books, short stories, and other easy stories as much as possible. While reading, they are likely to locate and learn many new words along with their meanings and correct spellings.
Having Knowledge of Syllables
Teachers must teach third-graders to divide the word into small parts and then to spell each part individually. Doing this will help to learn and memorize new words easily.
Spelling Out Aloud
It is always a good idea to spell the word loudly as it not only boosts one's confidence but also increases the probability of correct spellings as by spelling out aloud one can arrange the order of the letters in the word resulting in correct spellings.
Playing Words Games
As third graders love to play games, make them learn spellings through games. Play scrabble, word match and other board and computer games that are related to vocabulary with third graders. This will help third graders to easily spell words and they will enjoy this method of learning a lot too.
Spelling Classes
In third grade, teachers must organize a spelling class once a week in which students will share the spellings which they learned during the previous week. Also, animated and colorful banners of hard words should be displayed and each student must be asked to spell one banner. This will help to learn spellings easier and quickly.
