What is GroundHogs Day?
The Groundhogs day is celebrated on 2nd February each year. It is a holiday based on German superstition. The Groundhog Day is not a public holiday but it is still celebrated actively in many parts of the USA.
Roots and Origin
Thousands of years ago, animalism and worship of nature was a common thing amongst the people of Europe. The people of the part which is now known as Germany used to believe that the badgers had the power to predict the future. They believed that a badger is blessed with supernatural powers to predict the coming of the spring. They heavily depended on the badgers while planting crops and harvesting them.
Many Germans settled in the area of Pennsylvania as immigrants. There were no badgers in the area of Pennsylvania that is why the badger was substituted with a groundhog. However, the people were wise enough to understand that this was nothing but a superstition but the tradition was continued as a part of the culture. According to the tradition, if the groundhog sees its shadow on February 2 and runs to hide in the burrow by being scared of it, it signifies that winter will continue for the next couple of weeks. But if the groundhog does not see its shadow, then the spring is on its way.
