Kwanzaa is a celebration that was created be a professor of Africana studies in 1966. The purpose is to honor African heritage and the concept of family. The holiday is observed between December 26 and January 1. It is estimated that roughly six million people celebrate Kwanzaa in the United States each year. The first Kwanzaa holiday card made its way to shelves in 1992. These worksheets will help students make their way to understanding more about the celebration of Kwanzaa which is rooted on the concepts of family and unity.

What is Kwanzaa?


Kwanzaa is a widely celebrated African-American festival. Unlike many other festivals like Christmas, Eid, and Hanukah, Kwanzaa is not a religious festival. It has no ties with any religion. Rather it is a festival that is celebrated to honor the African culture and heritage. It is celebrated from December 26 to January 1.


History

This festival is relatively new and was established by an African American professor Ron Karenga. He was also an activist and he wanted the black Americans to reconnect with their African ties. This festival was celebrated amidst the black nationalist movement. It was to provoke a cultural revolution. Some people believe that Kwanzaa is a substitute to Christmas however, that is not true.


The Seven Principles

The festival of Kwanzaa is based on seven principles. Each day, one of the principles of Kwanzaa is celebrated. These principles are meant to be the building blocks of African families. Here are the seven principles of Kwanzaa.


kujichagulia


It means self-determination. It is the action when one can take a stand for the community and speak for the rights of the community.


ujima


It means collective work and responsibility. It refers to the action of helping people within the African community.


ujamaa


It means cooperative economics. It refers to the businesses that are established and supported for the welfare of the community and people.


nia


It means a sense of purpose. It refers to the realization of making goals that will benefit the community.


kuumba


It means creativity. It refers to the actions that help in making the community look clean and beautiful.


Imani


It means faith. It refers to the faith that everybody should have regarding the betterment of the world and communities.
