Valentine's Day is an unofficial holiday where people generally celebrate the people that they have affectionate feelings for. It is celebrated on February fourteenth. I find it to be the most difficult day of the year to get a dinner reservation and a bunch of roses. Therefore my husband and I wait until the following weekend to celebrate. The heart is the general symbol of this holiday. These worksheets will have students explore different aspect of Valentine's Day.

Notes of Kindheartedness

There is someone in everyone's life that you definitely do not thank enough. I know with me, it is definitely my landlord. He wakes up all hours of the night to make sure I have a hot shower in the morning. Share with your students who you think that you under appreciate in your life and write them a note of thanks. Then have them do the same. You can also do this in video format.


Writing Dialogue

I often have students decorate two love birds. Make sure to make it a fun craft program. The language arts portion kicks in after we are happy with where our craft is. I have the students write a full dialogue of what these two would say to one another over the course of the day.


Why Do We Celebrate Valentine's Day?

Valentine day is known as the day of love. It is the day when lovers and friends show admiration for each other. This day represents love and romance. Couples send each other Valentine's Day cards. They go out for dinners and exchange gifts to show their love for each other. It is considered as the perfect day to express your feelings for your loved ones.


The History Of Valentine's Day

The Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine. He was a Catholic priest in Rome during the 3rd century. During that time period, many Romans were converting to Christianity. But there were many strict rules for the observance of Christian rituals as Emperor Clausius II was a pagan. The roman soldiers at that time were not allowed to marry. This is because the emperor believed that the soldiers should only pay attention to Rome. Saint Valentine was the one who married these soldiers in secret ceremonies at church. This is how he gained the reputation of someone who believed in the importance of love. Claudius found out what Saint Valentine had been doing and He was jailed. Valentine was known to have cared for the fellow prisoners and the jailor's daughter. The daughter of the jailor was a blind woman. Legend has it that the blindness of the woman was cured by Saint Valentine. Right after that, he was executed. The jailor's daughter received a love message right before his execution that said: "From your Valentine". The Saint Valentine of Rome was executed on the 14th of February in 270 AD. This is the reason why the Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February of each year.


Christianity prevailed in Rome after two hundred years of Saint Valentine's execution. At this time, a pagan ritual for fertility was still held in February each which was canceled by the Pope. The pope also declared the 14th of February as the Saint Valentine's Day. Later in the middle ages, poet Chaucer linked romantic love with Saint Valentine.
