Writing prompts at this very young age will help put students in a comfortable place where they can be free to talk about their everyday world. It makes a good deal of sense to read the prompt as a class and even have a light-hearted discussion about our thoughts. The writing prompts in this section will help new writers learn to begin to express their thoughts, emotions, and dream for themselves. Each prompt is engaging and just a little bit fun too!

Kindergarten Writing Prompts:

Ready For Bed? - Tell us about your night time routine. Each night, the sun goes down and the moon comes out to watch over us as we sleep.

Where Do You Call "Home"? - We all live somewhere. Some of us live in short houses and some of us in apartments. Tell the reader about where you call home.

I'm the Teacher - Teachers take care of us and make sure we learn fun things. What if you got to be the teacher for a day?

My Parents - Moms and dads do lots of things each day to help us. How do your parents care for you day in and out?

My Favorite Thing About School - We all have favorite things. The funny thing is that everybody has their own little interests.

My Favorite Toy - Toys are lots of fun to play with. They help us use our imaginations. Tell the reader all about your favorite toy.

My Invention - Some people invent robots to help with work and some invent medicines to help the sick. What would you invent if you could make something that would help others? If you could invent something, what would it do?

My Favorite Places - Some places you can eat at, like restaurants. Where are your favorite places to go? Describe all of your favorite places.

Brothers and Sisters - Brothers and sisters are part of our families. Do you have brothers or sisters? What do you like about them? Do you have a sibling (brother or sister)? What are they like.

I'm the Boss - If you were the boss, what would you do differently? Imagine you had a whole day to make all the choices you want. What would you do if you were the boss for a day?

My Favorite Thing To Eat - Pizza always seems to be the favorite. Food helps us grow strong and it also tastes good. What is your favorite food?

When I Grow Up - Take a deep look into your future. There are lots of jobs in the world for us to become when we grow up. We can be firefighters or doctors or even artists.

My Favorite Color - Color gives us certain emotions that are not the same for all of them. Colors are everywhere. The sky is blue. The grass is green.

My Favorite Animal - I love Kolas and Seals. What about you? There are lots of different kinds of animals in the world. Some animals we might find around us are dogs or cats or even birds and fish.

My Favorite Book - Do you have a favorite? At school, we read lots of books. Some books are about pirates and others are about presidents.

My Artsy Side - Is there a artist hiding in you? Bring him/her to life. In art class, we get to play with lots of different art supplies. Sometimes we paint and sometimes we use crayons.

The Rule - What rules do you have and follow? Part of going to school means learning the rules we have to keep us safe. Some rules include 'no running in the hallway' and 'no talking when the teachers are talking.'

Lunch Foods - Lunch is a great time of the day! We get to sit with our friends and eat good food. The lunch ladies can really make great meatloaf.

My Sports Career - Sports are a good way to get exercise. Some kids love soccer. Other kids love baseball. Do you play a sport? Tell us about the sports you play or wish you played.

School Bus To Anywhere - School buses take us where we need to go. If a school bus could take you anywhere, right now, where would you go?

Creative Writing Projects for Kindergarten


All young students should be taught the art of creative writing. Creative writing is an important asset in building good cognition for your mind. There are plenty of ways to make the process of creative writing fun for children. Every teacher should adopt some strategies to make it a fun process that children would enjoy. Kindergarteners are just starting to learn the basics of writing. Hard and complex creative writing projects will only make it difficult for them. Here are some creative writing projects that will be easy and interesting for the kindergarteners.


Writing Small Messages

Kindergarteners are very young to be assigned to write complex stories. In order to build their creative writing muscles, you can ask them to write messages to their loved ones. These messages could be anything that they want to say to a friend or parent. Constructing the message would be the part where the children will learn the art of creative writing. This is not much but it would be a good start to introduce creative writing to the children. It is best to start with something small and light so they do not feel a burden. This activity will also build their bonds and relationships into stronger ones.


Salt Tray and Chopsticks

Kindergarteners are all about fun and adventure. They do not like the boring and conventional ways of doing things. These young minds are always in a search for something new and funky. You can ditch the paper and pen for some time. Assign each of your students a salt tray along with some chopsticks. Ask them to write something creative with that.
