What Are Mammals?

There are several different classifications of animals. The mammal is one such classification. It is a particular class that defines and describes many different animals that we see around daily. There are numerous things that make an animal a mammal. The first thing that acts as a defining principle for the mammal is they have glands to give milk. These glands help in feeding their babies. The second important trait of an animal that is a mammal is that it is warm-blooded. Another trait is that they have hair or fur to protect their bodies. An interesting fact is that humans come under the classification of mammals as well. Most of them also have teeth. However, the anteater is an exception that does not have any teeth. Other examples of mammals are dogs, elephants, horses, and whales. The whale is the largest mammal whereas the elephant is the largest land mammal.

One question that is often asked is where do mammals live. They can survive in different environments. They are very adaptable. Some mammals live in the ocean like a whale. Others live on land and underground. Some mammals can also fly, for example, bats.

Types Of Mammals

Reproduction-wise they are divided into three types.

Live Young

These are the mammals that give birth to their offspring's. Their babies come out of their bodies alive. They are known as the placental mammals. Most mammals are placental.

Marsupials

These are the special kinds of mammals who have a natural pouch in their bodies to carry a young one. For example kangaroos, opossum, and koala.

Egg Laying

Only a few mammals lay eggs. They are known as the monotremes. An example of such a mammal is a platypus.
