Social studies is often a core subject area for students starting in early elementary grade levels all the way through high school. While many consider this current events and geography there is a great deal more to it. The main consideration in most classes is helping students understand different cultures, making global connections, and change throughout time. These reading worksheets will help students explore a spacious offering of Social Studies related areas.

American History Reading Passages


American Civil War – It took only 4 years, but had a major impact on over 150 years of culture.

Slavery – While a thing of the past in America, this still goes on in the world.

U.S. Constitution – Thanksgiving was initially a day for giving thanks to this document.

U.S. Presidents – Do you know where the phrase "OK" comes from? The press got it from Martin Van Buren.

Voting and Elections – There is a tie for the candidate to carry the most States in history. Reagan and wouldn't you know it, Nixon.

Westward Expansion (of the 1800s) – Louisiana was purchased for $15 million. A steal I would say.

Women's History – Did you know that until 1969 a women could not divorce her spouse without showing fault?


Countries and Continents Reading Passages


Africa – Over 1,000 languages are spoken on this continent.

Antarctica – The lowest recorded temperature here was negative 129 °F (-89 °C).

Canada – Not many people know that the Blackberry (smartphone) was developed in Canada.

China – The world's second largest economic power and home to the largest man-made wall.

Japan – Made up of just under 7,000 islands.

North America – Named after Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci.


World History Reading Passages


Ancient Egypt – The process to properly make a mummy took 70 days.

Ancient Rome – They are credited with trial by Jury. Although military leaders would often stack the deck.

Explorers – Many explorers were map makers and navigators, but they didn't know the inner workings of a ship.

Holocaust – If we just had a time machine, this is a time period we wish we could change.

World Leaders – Turkmenistan's president was the dentist of the previous president.

World Religions – Many religions have a period of meditation that is meant to heal body and soul.

What is Social Studies?


Social study is a subject with many diverse topics and fields that are taught in the education system in the United States and many other parts of the world. Most of these fields include social science, humanities, geography, history, etc. Here are some reasons why social studies are important for students.


Awareness Of The World

There are so many lessons in the social studies that teach topics that would help the students in getting an awareness of the world. These topics include community, early man, family, neighborhood, Indus valley civilization, world's great leaders, French revolution, American colonization, etc. The awareness that students get from such topics is extremely necessary to build their understanding of the world. The various civilizations, the renaissance period, and ancient times and their impact are what are mostly taught in social studies. Students will get to know the significance of their place and existence in the world through these topics.


Geographical Understanding

In social studies, topics such as landforms, vegetation, wildlife resources, pollution, water resources, and disaster management are taught that help the students understand the geography of the world. They get to know about the resources that occur naturally in Earth and how they help in our daily life. They also get to know about wildlife such as flora and fauna. An important aspect of social studies is the description of the outer world. Students must learn this at an early age that their world is not the only world. They should know about the universe and the parts of the universe.


Cultural Understanding

There are many different languages, cultures, traditions, and religions in the world. The students must learn about these cultures at an early age so that they can develop an aspect of respect for everyone. Social media teaches these values to young students.
