When we are focused on composition, we are looking at many different facets of a writing piece. The overall essence is that we are looking at the structure of the piece. What is the purpose and what is the author attempting to do? To gauge the success of a piece we then look at if the author was able to achieve their inferred goal. This is why writing is more of an art then a science because it highly open to interpretation. The writer may have been going in one direction, while their audience sees something else within it. This selection of worksheets will help students focus on creating new forms of their own composition as well as helping them to understand the needed mechanics. Classical Forms of Composition

There are thought to be four classic forms of composition (argumentation, description, exposition, and narration). These modes of writing were identified by the world of academia in the early nineteenth century to help us better understand literature. This was revisited by the modern academic world and debated and reinterpreted but has held steadfast as the classification. The interesting thing about these forms of composition is that in extended writing pieces a work can use multiple forms.


Argumentation is mostly an exercise in research. The goal is to investigate a topic by collecting data. evaluate the importance of evidence and make inferences. There is a great deal of preparation that goes into this. This type of composition often lends itself to comparing and contrasting things that are similar. The end goal being to create a piece that values one over the other and persuades the reader to take this position as well.


Descriptive writing is an account of someone or something. The focus here is being as detailed as possible so that the audience has a vivid picture in their mind as to the subject of the work. Narration differs in that it is a personal account of a story. The narrator can be part of the active story or outside of it all together. This is one of the more creative forms of composition because the narrator helps you form the story in many different ways and sequence can really be shifted here.
